Gen Z is taking a different approach to fitness compared to older generations. Rather than looking at fitness and exercise as a chore that they have to do, Gen Z tends to look at fitness as part of a complete lifestyle, as something to be incorporated into travel, play, and into any other fitness-compatible part of living. Let’s look at the five exercise routines and trends that are taking Gen Z by storm:
1. Walking workouts
Walking is one of the most natural, sustainable, and low-impact exercises the human body can do. Most cultures walk as a primary mode of transportation, not just to get from room to room. Gen Z seems to understand this and is opting for more condensed towns and neighborhoods where walking makes more sense. Weather permitting, walking at a good pace can get the blood moving, stimulate good skeletal health, and strengthen the muscles of the legs, feet, back, and abdomen all at once. Best of all, walking can be very practical. If one walks at a modest pace in the right setting, getting around can be done without even breaking a sweat; which is important if you’re walking to and from work, or on your way to a date. It’s also a great way to see and experience more in your local community—you might even get to know your neighbors a bit better.
2. Megaformer workout
If you’ve ever seen a megaformer, it looks a bit like a Transformer merged with a rowing machine. But it is a sensible and relatively compact means of getting a full-body, low-impact workout all in one spot. They are a great option for a total home gym solution since they have everything you’ll ever need. But most Gen Z’ers who take to this trend are doing Megaformer classes at their local gym to bundle a little social interaction with their fitness routine. These machines take some getting used to, but Gen Z likes learning new things. If you sign up for a class, be sure to get there a few minutes early to learn the basics of the machine.
3. Running
This has always been the go-to exercise for those who like to get a lot of impact out of a relatively simple activity. Like walking, this is also practical for getting around, if you don’t mind being sweaty when you get there. For Gen Z’ers, it is an excellent way to get around, see nature, experience your home town or survey a new town efficiently. It’s one of the least expensive ways to work out. All you need is compatible clothing and a good pair of athletic shoes. Running is, and always has been, a very practical and low budget way to get fit.
4. Yoga
Yoga is more than just a system of stretching and isometric exercise, it is a full and complete spiritual discipline that has been around for thousands of years. Gen Z’ers understand this, and are participating in yoga for fitness, the chance to meet new people, as well as for the spiritual benefits.
5. Wearable tech
Smartwatch technology has come a long way in recent years. These devices monitor biometrics, offer GPS tracking, and so much more. With downloadable apps, they are an excellent companion for everyday life, and Gen Z is noticing that they can even replace your cell phone, taking a little bit of pack-weight off their busy lifestyles.
