Transitional Skirt Styles to Wear All Year Long

A transitional skirt is one skirt that can be worn in almost every season. Spring to winter and through summer and autumn—these skirt styles when paired with the right accessories, and in versatile materials and colors—can be worn all year round with comfort and style in mind:

1. Mini skirt

When it comes to wearing a miniskirt through several seasons, color and fabric are key. A denim miniskirt can work beautifully with boots and tights in the cooler seasons and sandals all summer long. A suede mini in black, charcoal or burgundy will work from fall all the way into March or April. Stock up on tights that keep you warm or pair your mini with athletic leggings and boots for the coldest days.

2. Wrap skirt

One of the most fun things about a wrap style skirt is how easy they are to DIY. If fabric shopping is not your favorite, you can find large panels of silky fabric at Asian markets or pair two scarves from a street fair to serve as a wrap DIY. These bright patterns and tones, paired with a simple turtleneck and boots, can keep you warm on the coolest evening. If you love Etsy, you can also find double sided wraps to suit your needs from pool to party and in a variety of lengths.

3. High waisted pleated skirt

The high waisted skirt can be found in a variety of lengths and materials. These easy to care for skirts can often be washed in cool water, tumbled on low and hung to finish drying to keep those pleats crisp. These skirts, whether short or long, are built to fit high at the waist and flare. This will give you plenty of room for tights or leggings on a cold day. Shorter skirts with box pleats will move easily as you head out for fun with friends on a crisp fall day.

4. Maxi skirt

Maxi or ankle skimming midi skirts are a favorite any time of the year. Keep an eye out for darker garments when maxi shopping. A floral print on a pastel will likely serve well in the spring and summer, but a floral print on black, dark green or even rust will serve through all the seasons. Look for smooth boots with no hardware to wear under your maxi in cold weather; you don’t want buckles catching in your hem. Consider also investing in a long slip or a culotte slip to wear under it if you love tights and fleece leggings. For summer, just enjoy the silky cool feel of the slip under your maxi.

5. Pencil skirt

Pencil style skirts in almost any shade will transfer well from season to season. These skirts are a great excuse to play with textured and patterned pantyhose as well. Plain hose and pumps can take you to a business meeting; lacy or fishnet hose and heels can take you out for dinner. When shopping for such a skirt to boost your wardrobe, use your hands. You want a fairly heavy fabric with a lot of body so it will hold its shape over the day. Look for something with a high poly content to avoid wrinkles. Start with basic colors; tan and black will go a long way!

Each of the skirts above can work in most any season. If you’re considering a pod wardrobe purchase, focus on colors that are not commonly tied to seasons, such as pale pastels or pure whites.
